People are asking me about upgrading their BlackBerry to OS 6 and even if the instructions is already all over the web, I am still willing to share how am I able to upgrade my BlackBerry 9300.

Before upgrading you need to have the following tools:

  • BlackBerry Desktop Manager
  • BlackBerry Device Software (OS)
  • USB cable
  • BlackBerry handset

Not to worry because everything can be downloaded at the BlackBerry site and just in case you can’t find the Device Software that is compatible to your phone, torrent is always there to rescue you.

First thing that you need to do is to install the BlackBerry Desktop Manager if you still don’t have one installed on your computer. Why the need to install the Desktop Manager, it will be needed to make a backup of your current OS as well as the files on your headset. Just in case something happened then you can still retrieve your old files. Once Desktop Manager is already installed, you can now start making a backup by following the step by step instructions. Once the backup setup is done, you may now close the desktop manager.

Then install the BlackBerry Device Software (OS) that is compatible to your phone on your PC.

Once installation is done, go to your Control Panel to verify if the Desktop Manager and the Device Software is properly installed.

If you found something similar to your control panel and the one on the picture above then you are good to go to the next step.

The next step is to connect your BlackBerry handset to your computer using the USB cable then go to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Research In Motion\AppLoader

Once you are inside the folder of the said address, look for the vendor.xml filethen delete it. After deleting the said file, look for the Loader application then double click on it to start running the application. Just follow the instructions provided and the must important thing is to stay your BlackBerry headset connected to your computer until the installation process is done. Installation process will only took 20 to 60 minutes on average to complete then your BlackBerry handset will reboot itself.

At this point, once device reboot is done you are already good to go and enjoy your BlackBerry phone with the new OS on it. Just to remind you some applications may not work properly but fear not because you just need to reinstall the application for it to be compatible with your new OS.

Hope this helps and just ask away if you have other questions.
